Many people have said that in an ideal world, children would be raised in households with two parents, and not just one. But at a presidential campaign event on Jan. 6, 2012, Rick Santorum railed against gay parenthood, saying that a child would be better off with a father in prison than in with two gay parents. Hearing this, I remembered a young man from Iowa, Zach Wahls, a 19-year-old University of Iowa student, who early in 2011 spoke about the strength of his family during a public forum on House Joint Resolution 6 in the Iowa House of Representatives. Wahls has two mothers, and came to oppose House Joint Resolution 6 which would end civil unions in Iowa.
