On the Hamilton-Pence-Trump brouhaha:
Two things that President-Elect Donald Trump is ignorant of — if he were not this ignorant he would not have sent two whining tweets on Twitter about Pence’s being “harassed” and demanding an apology:
1) Vice President-elect Pence chose to be a public servant. He is not a private citizen. He is not royalty. He is a public servant, paid by the public and expected to serve the public. Public servants need to expect that they will have interactions with members of the general public that they would not have if they were private citizens. The appeal from the stage in no way constituted “harassment.”
2) Pence, who has said he was not offended, would not have received this heartfelt appeal if his previous behavior did not cause members of the cast of Hamilton to be “alarmed and anxious that your new administration will not protect us, our planet, our children, our parents, or defend us and uphold our inalienable rights.” Pence’ previous behavior, and by extension Trump’s, explains exactly why the members of the cast “truly hope that this show has inspired you to uphold our American values and to work on behalf of all of us.”
I hope Trump learns that he and Pence are public servants who are expected to work for the public good of all US citizens. But I won’t expect it, since he should have learned that lesson more than a year ago, before he threw his hat in the ring for the US presidency.
Oh, I just thought of a third thing Trump is ignorant of:
3) The First Amendment to the US Constitution.
Trump’s behavior the week of November 13, 2016, has not been encouraging.
